Alan Rickman’s Childhood

Alan Rickman was born Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman in Hammersmith, West London, England, on February 21, 1946. Margaret Doreen Rose (née Bartlett) and Bernard William Rickman were his parents. His Catholic father worked as a factory worker, decorator, and house painter, as well as a former World War II aircraft fitter, while his Methodist mother stayed at home.

He was raised with his three siblings, David Rickman and Michael Rickman, two brothers, and Sheila Rickman, a sister. Michael, his brother, is a Leicestershire District Councillor. Rickman’s father died of lung cancer when he was only eight years old. His mother raised him and his three siblings primarily alone when his father died. In 1960, his mother remarried, but they separated three years later.
He went to Acton’s Derwentwater Primary School. Then he went to London’s Latymer Upper School, where he was active in play. He went on to Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art after that. Then he worked as a graphic designer for the in-house magazine of the Royal College of Art, which he considered to be a more steady job than performing.
