Alfre Woodard was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the United States on November 8, 1952. She is of North American ancestry and holds an American passport. Constance, a homemaker, and Marion H. Woodard, an entrepreneur and interior designer, are the parents of Woodard. She was raised in the same household as her siblings. Woodard graduated from Bishop Kelley High School, a private Catholic high school in Tulsa, in 1970. She went on to Boston University to study drama, from which she graduated.

Career

Alfre Woodard began her acting career in the theater. She made her film debut as Rita in Remember My Name, following her breakthrough role in the Off-Broadway play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enough (1977).

For her role in Cross Creek, Woodard received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1983. Woodard won her first Primetime Emmy Award in the same year for her role in the NBC drama series Hill Street Blues.

Later in the 1980s, Woodard had to lead Emmy Award-nominated performances in a number of made-for-television movies, as well as an Emmy Award-winning role in the pilot episode of L.A. Law as a woman dying of leukemia.

Woodard was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1986 and for Guest Actress in 1988 for her role as Dr. Roxanne Turner in the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere. Woodard appeared in films such as Grand Canyon, Heart and Souls, Crooklyn, How to Make an American Quilt, Primal Fear, and Star Trek: First Contact during the 1990s.
