He began his career in 1978 with Radio Clyde, a Scottish local broadcaster. He began his BBC career as a correspondent on the ‘Today Programme’ in 1986, then moved on to ‘Breakfast Time’ in 1988. He began working as a journalist for BBC News in 1990.
He traveled to over thirty countries and covered various international problems while serving as Washington Correspondent. He was the live host of the regular programming on Radio 5.
Bill began his career alongside Sian Williams in the BBC Breakfast studio and later worked with Sarah Montague, Carol Kirkwood, Mishal Hussian, and Susanna Reid. In 2008, he joined Williams to replace Dermot Mirnagham as the main daily host of Breakfast.
