He spent his entire childhood in La Mesa, California, with his brother Bruce Walton, playing basketball. Bill went on to Helix High School in La Mesa, where he was an active basketball player. As a result, the Portland Trail Blazers selected him first overall in the first round. Bill went on to play for the Portland Trail Blazers as a center.
