He faced suspension in 2005 after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy for the third time in four games. Following that, the Lions filed a complaint against Charles, requiring him to repay $10 million of the $14.2 million bonus he received from the Lions. He also failed other medication tests, testing positive for Vicodin and marijuana. He later admitted to being dependent on the medications to relieve the pain from his wounds.
As a result of his breach of contract, he was ordered to repay the Lion’s 6.1 million dollars.
