Chip grew up in Kalispell, Montana. He was reared by his parents. He was trained to hunt and fish at a young age, two life skills that would come in handy later in his life. Chip adored hunting and envisaged himself as a hunter as a child. He took a vacation to Alaska in 1988 to test his hunting skills, and his excursion developed into a permanent migration to the state.

He settled in Noorvik, Alaska, a small town with a population of roughly 700 people. During his stay there, he learned how to hunt with varied equipment, including a 12-gauge antique rifle, bow and arrow, and a.22 caliber long rifle, which he always brought with him. He also learned to hunt with his bare hands if needed. The remains are frequently turned into decorations, which are also sold.

Hailstone and his family’s lifestyle eventually drew the attention of television producers, who approached them with the idea of producing a documentary television program about their lives. They accepted because they would earn money, and receive exposure, and other perks from working on the show.
