Christof Putzel was born in Washington, D.C. in 1979 to Michael Putzel and Ann Blackman. His father covered the Vietnam War and the White House for the Associated Press. His mother worked as an Associated Press reporter and a Time Magazine correspondent. Putzel’s grandpa was also a prominent editor for the Associated Press.

Professional Career

He began his production career at a young age, making his first documentary, Left Behind, about AIDS orphans in Kenya. At the time, he was still an undergraduate student at Connecticut College.

The film won the David’s Wolfer, Silver Chris Award, and Angelus Award from the International Documentary Association in 2002 for Left Behind. After screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003, Left Behind earned an HBO Films Best Student Film Award, a Student Academy Award, a Student Emmy, and best short film, as well as being a runner-up for Audience Impact.
In 2005, he joined Current TV as one of the initial network employees. Since the 1993 incident, Black Hawk Down, Christof was the first American television journalist to report from Mogadishu, Somalia.

Christof Putzel’s marriage began in 2007. He married Julia Taft, a great-granddaughter of William Howard Taft, president and chief executive, and a great-granddaughter of the late Republican senator from Ohio, Robert A. Taft. Julia holds a nursing degree from New York University and a Georgetown diploma. However, in 2013, they were divorced. There has been no word on whether or not they have a child from their marriage.
