Elie Honig is a former federal and state prosecutor. He was given the nickname “Hotshot Honig” by the Gotti family. He prosecuted and handled federal cases involving organized crime, human trafficking, public corruption, violent crime, and other issues over his tenure. He has also dabbled with production, having created the podcast “Up Against the Mob” to chronicle his life story.

Early Life, Age, Parents

Elie Honig was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 4, 1975 (he will be 48 years old in 2023). He grew up in Voorhees and eventually moved to Cherry Hill, where he graduated with the class of 1992. He received an education and graduated from Rutgers University in 1997. Later, in 2000, he received his JD (Doctor of Law Degree) from Harvard University.

Elie’s grandparents were Holocaust survivors who immigrated from Poland in 1949. His grandparents settled in Passaic, New Jersey, after arriving in the United States. In 1950, his father was born. His father currently heads a law practice in Cherry Hill, and his mother was a social worker. Ben Honig is his younger brother (also known as Benjamin Gary Honig). Dana Ovadia is his brother’s wife.

Ascend to Fame

Elie began his job after graduating. He worked as an Associate at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington, DC. He worked there from September 2000 to April 2004, and his first case, an attempted robbery of a well-known drug dealer legal firm, lasted just over a month. He was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in April 2004. He was prosecuting Angelo Prisco, a captain in the Genovese organized crime family, at the time. As a federal prosecutor in New York, he also brought down more than 100 mobsters. He was elevated to Assistant Attorney General in the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice in September 2012. He worked there for at least 5 years until leaving in May 2018.

In 2018, Elie Honig chose to shift his work path. In June 2018, he became a Special Counsel at Lowenstein Sandler LLP, a national legal firm based in Roseland, New Jersey. He joined the CNN news network, Broadcast Media Production, and Distribution in October 2018. He is currently a CNN senior legal analyst.

Elie Honig hosts the CAFE and Vox Media crime podcast “Up Against The Mob” (Released on 8th September 2021). He is also the co-host of the CAFE Insider podcast “Third Degree,” which debuted in March 2021.

Elie Honig is also the author of Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor’s Code and Corrupted the Justice Department, which was released on July 6, 2021.

He is now promoting his latest book, Untouchable: How Powerful People Get Away with It (released on January 31, 2023). In the book, he tells the narrative of Donald Trump, the most powerful and notoriously positive-attitude personality (apparently only), and how he avoids the legal system, justice, and misdeeds.

His wife Rachael served as acting United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey in 2021. In addition, she became only the second woman in the office’s 230-year history to hold this post.
