Gary Chapman was born in Waurika, Oklahoma, on August 19, 1957. He is the son of Rev. Terry W. Chapman, an Assemblies of God pastor who served for 56 years before passing away in 2009, and Mary Chapman, his mother.

Chapman was a member of bands during his high school and college years. He went to Bible college in Texas, which is now known as Southern Assemblies of God University. Chapman is of White ethnicity and is an American citizen.

Career

Gary Chapman relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he was hired to play guitar for The Rambos, a rock band. His song ‘Father’s Eyes’ was later recorded as the title song for Amy Grants’ Grammy-nominated second album, My Father’s Eye, in 1979. Then he released ‘Finally,’ which was recorded by T.G. Sheppard and went to number one on the Country music charts.
