King began her career in journalism as a reporter and weekend anchor at WDAF-TV. She has also worked for WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland, and WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C. Later that year, in 1981,  hired as a television news anchor for WFSB-TV, a CBS affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut. She worked there for 18 years while also hosting her syndicated daytime show. In 1982, she married an American attorney named William Bumpus. Their marriage lasted 11 years before they divorced in 1993. Gayle and William have two children: a son, William Bumpus Jr., and a daughter, Kirby Bumpus.
