Gene Chizik is a retired football player and coach in the United States. Chizik, a former University of Florida football player, has coached for the Auburn Tigers, Texas Longhorns, Iowa State Cyclones, and North Carolina Tar Heels.

Gene Chizik was born Eugene T. Chizik in Clearwater, Florida, on December 28, 1961. The 58-year-old earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Florida in 1986. He moved on to Clemson University in South Carolina to pursue his master’s degree in guidance and counseling, which he received in 1991.

Chizik had a brief stint at the University of Florida in 1986, where he played collegiate football.

Career

Gene Chizik began his coaching career as the defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach at Seminole High School in Florida, right after graduating from college. He worked there for two years before enrolling in a graduate school at Clemson and working as a graduate assistant with the outside linebackers. During the 1988 Citrus Bowl and 1989 Gator Bowl, he was a part of Bill Oliver’s coaching staff.

In 1990, he went full-time into teaching and spent a year as the defensive ends coach for the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, helping them win the Ohio Valley Conference championship. In 1991, he left to coach linebackers for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, and in 1996, he was promoted to defensive coordinator.

From 1998 through 2001, he was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the University of Central Florida Knights. He coached the Auburn Tigers from 2002 to 2004, at which time he had one of his most successful periods as a coach.

In 2005, he was hired associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach for the Texas Longhorns, and he helped them win the NCAA Division I-A national football championship.

Gene Chizik was hired head coach of Iowa State University’s football team, the Iowa State Cyclones, in November 2006. Before quitting in 2008, he led the team in five bowl games.

In 2009, he signed a five-year contract for $1.9 million per year as the head coach of Auburn University’s football team, the Auburn Tigers.

Chizik became the defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015 after leaving from Auburn. In 2017, he stepped down as a coach.

Gene Chizik has dabbled with broadcasting since his days at Auburn. He used to conduct a weekly football radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio and covered National Signing Day for ESPNU. In 2014, he joined ESPN’s worldwide sports network, SEC Network, as a studio analyst. Chizik has been with the SEC Network since his retirement from coaching.

 

With his wife Jonna Livingston, he is the father of three children.

Gene Chizik is married to Jonna Livingston Nicely, a former high school coach’s daughter.

They’ve been married for 24 years and have been together since June 22, 1996. Landry Chizik and Kennedy Chizik, twin daughters, and Eugene Calloway Chizik, son, are the couple’s three children.
