George Younce was born on February 22, 1930, in Patterson, North Carolina, as George Wilson Younce. He was the youngest of his parents’ five children when he was born. Ruby Ham, Tom Younce, Ray Younce, and Brudge Younce are his siblings. His father, he stated, had the greatest effect on his musical career.

In 1936, Younce and his family relocated to Lenoir, North Carolina. He first heard Southern Gospel music when he was 15 years old in his hometown. During his adolescent years, he joined his first quartet, the Spiritualaires. He shifted to the bass section as his voice changed during adolescence.
