Early Life

Henry was raised in Stamford, where his mother worked as a teacher and his father as an IRS revenue agent. His twin sister was one of three children he grew up with. He became passionate about basketball at a young age and played it at his local high school, which helped him win a basketball scholarship to Franklin Pierce University. He tried theater and become interested in performing while he was there. After earning his business degree, he started working for a Fortune 500 corporation in Stamford. He wasn’t happy, though, and decided to pursue acting as a career. He relocated to New York City and pursued acting studies, which helped him land bit parts in both films and television shows. Before playing Tyrone Montgomery in the soap opera “Another World,” he appeared on “Saturday Night Live,” “New York Undercover,” and the movie “Above the Rim.”

Career

Simmons appeared in the final three seasons of the long-running soap opera “Another World.” It is set in the fictional town of Bay City and focuses on various families of various classes and ideologies. Following his tenure on the show, he was cast in the police procedural drama “NYPD Blue,” playing Detective Baldwin Jones in the fictional 15th Precinct detective squad in Manhattan. The show received widespread critical acclaim for its realistic depiction of the characters’ professional and personal lives. Simmons joined the cast during the final six seasons of the show, which aired from 2000 to 2005.
