Allende was born in Lima, Peru, on August 2, 1942. When her parents, Tomas Allende and Francisca Llona Barros, split when she was three years old, she and her mother moved to Santiago, Chile, where she was raised by her grandparents. Allende attended an American private school in Bolivia before enrolling in and graduating from an English private school in Beirut, Lebanon. She was a voracious reader as a child, especially of William Shakespeare’s works.

Career

In Santiago, she worked as the secretary of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Later, she worked as a television interviewer and newscaster for Paula magazine, where she worked as a journalist. House of the Spirits (1982), Allende’s debut novel, was rejected by various Latin American publishers before being published in Spain. The book was a huge hit, and it was eventually adapted into a film directed by Bille August, which was released in the United States in 1994. Throughout her life, Allende has published numerous books and biographies. Paula (1994), Eva Luna (1987), City of the Beast (2002), Ripper (2014), and The Japanese Lover are among her works (2015). She has received various prizes throughout her life, including Noble of the Year (Chile, 1983), a Los Angeles Times Book Prize nomination (United States, 1987), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the United States, 2014).

Personal Life

She married Miguel Frias, a student of engineering, in 1962. Paula, the couple’s first child, was born in 1963. In 1966, the couple welcomed their second son, Nicolas, into the world.

Isabel and her family moved to Venezuela to escape the CIA-backed military, where they resided for 13 years. She started residing in Spain in 1978 after a temporary separation from her husband Miguel Frias. She met William Gordon, a lawyer, during her journey to California to promote the release of Love and Shadows in the United States, and they fell in love. After her divorce from her first spouse Miguel Frias, she married Gordon in 1988.

She divorced her second husband, William Gordon, in April 2015. Harvard University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Letters degree for her contributions to the world of literature.
