The fight against cancer
Many women are battling breast cancer today, and regrettably, Jacqui’s family has a long history with the disease: her sister has battled it, her mother and aunt both had it and won the fight, but her grandmother did not. Jacqui underwent a double mastectomy in 2013 to prevent breast cancer, which she was very likely to have according to her family’s history. This means that the physicians removed all breast tissue from both of her breasts.
One week after the surgery, she returned to her surgeon, Dr. Constanza Cocilovo, and they discovered a malignancy in the tissue that had been removed the week before. The tumor itself was not cancerous, but it had a 15% probability of becoming cancerous if left alone. During an interview, Jacqui stated that discovering the tumor made her feel better since it justified what she did and proved that the risk was real.
She went to a plastic surgeon five days after her second visit to Dr. Constanza to repair her breasts as he continued to inject saline under her skin every week. Dr. Nahabedian replaced the temporary expander under Jacqui’s skin with silicone implants once her breasts were ready for surgery, and Jacqui’s life returned to normal, this time without the dread of breast cancer.
