He was born James Thomas Denton Jr. on January 20, 1963, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He is a television and film actor best known for his roles as Mike Delfino on the TV series “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2012), and most recently as Dr. Sam Radford in the TV fantasy drama series “Good Witch” (2015-2018), among many other diverse roles he has secured in his career. In 2011, he also provided the voice of Clark Kent/Superman in the animated feature “All-Star Superman.”

Early Life

James is the middle child of three born to dentist J.T. Denton and his wife Mary Jean Woolslair, who died in 2002 following a fight with breast cancer. Throughout his boyhood, James was drawn to Southern Baptism, and as a result, he became the Minister of Music at Westmoreland United Methodist Church in Westmoreland, Tennessee. He grew up in Goodlettsville, where he graduated from Goodlettsville High School before enrolling at the University of Tennessee, where he majored in television/journalism but earned his degree in advertising, subsequently working for a couple of radio stations selling advertisements before deciding to become an actor.

Career 

James began his acting career in a small theater in Nashville, but after a few appearances, he relocated to California to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time actor. His first on-screen appearance was in the 1993 film “Thieves Quarter,” and he went on to play Nick in another film, “Hunter’s Moon.” When he was cast as Mr. Lyle in the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated series “The Pretender” in 1997, he felt his first genuine taste of success. He appeared in 36 episodes of the critically acclaimed series from 1997 to 2000. #

Denton closed off the 1990s with appearances in John Woo’s Oscar-nominated “Face-Off” (1997), starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, and Mike Nichols’ Oscar-nominated “Primary Colors” (1998), starring John Travolta, Emma Thompson, and Kathy Bates. He continued to play supporting roles in several films and TV shows, including “The Pretender: Island of the Haunted” (2001) and “Philly” (2001-2002), but it was enough to get him a role in the extremely successful TV drama series “Desperate Housewives.”

James starred in 180 episodes of the “Desperate Housewives” series until leaving in 2012. He received two SAG awards for his work on the series. Despite not being especially active as an actor outside of the series. He did participate in several films, notably the drama picture. He co-starred with Brooke Langton and Colin Egglesfield. Following the conclusion of “Desperate Housewives,” James went on to have a successful career. First starring in the romantic comedy film “Karaoke Man” (2012). Then in the action drama film “Revelation Road: The Black Rider” in 2014.

But James was seeking another long-term job. James Denton didn’t have to wait long because he was cast as Dr. Sam Radford in the new fantasy series “Good Witch” in 2015. He has since appeared in 44 episodes of the award-winning series. He has played several significant roles, including Peter Hudson in the TV series “Devious Maids,”.
