Early Life

Garner despised one of his stepmothers, Wilma, who used to beat him and his brothers after his father remarried. He did, however, have a close relationship with his father’s last wife, Grace, who was kind to him and his brothers.

Garner enrolled at Hollywood High School, where he was introduced to modeling by one of his gym teachers. He later transferred to Norman High School, where he participated in a variety of sports and activities. However, he was unable to stay in school and eventually dropped out when he was 16 years old.

Following a couple of roles in various films, Garner landed a role in the series “Maverick” in 1957, where he played Bret Maverick and became well-known for his good-natured and likable demeanor. The series was a huge success, propelling him to stardom. Even though he left the series in 1960 due to financial disagreements, it still aided his career and net worth. However, before the 1960s came to an end, he returned to television and starred in the hit show “Support Your Local Sheriff!” ” in 1969.

Another television series that helped Garner become a household name in the United States was “The Rockford Files,” which premiered in 1974. His portrayal of Jim Rockford earned him an Emmy award, catapulting his career to even greater stardom. Despite continuing to act in the following decades, Garner began to appear less on screen due to his declining health. His most recent films include “Space Cowboys” in 2000 with Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and Clint Eastwood, “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” as Sandra Bullock’s father, and the older Noah in the hit film “The Notebook.” His success in both film and television aided his career and greatly increased his net worth.
