Jean Goebel’s sister worked at KTRH, a Houston CBS radio station, while Jean worked as a secretary at a private firm.

Dan, who was the news director for KTRH in 1956, was introduced to her through her sister.

Jean met Dan through her sister after she started working at the KTRH as a secretary. She described him as a beautiful, intelligent, and kind man at the introduction. They fell in love with one other shortly after their initial meeting and began dating the next year.

In 1957, the couple tied the knot.

The Children of Jean Goebel

Jean and her husband Dan welcomed their first child, a daughter named Robin Rather, a year after their wedding. After Goebel’s son, Danjack Rather, was born in 1960, the family of three became a family of four.

Dan had to be away from home for long periods of time during his radio career. During the civil rights movement, he barely spent 31 days a year at home.

Jean took care of the house and the kids while he was away. While supporting her husband’s career, she ensured that the family remained strong.

In an interview with CloserWeekly, her spouse commended her commitment to the family. “, he explained.

“I never take it for granted. I’m still working at it. Because if for any reason Jean left me, I wouldn’t be worth a damn.”

Her partner-in-crime had risen from being a pressman for many news agencies and radio FMs to being a news presenter for CBS in 1970. For nearly 20 years, he also hosted CBS’ flagship show, CBS Evening News.

Jean and her family currently reside in New York. Jean and Dan are the epitome of a wonderful pair, having been married for almost 60 years.

Goebel’s husband is a 44-year experienced journalist who worked for CBS News. The Big Interview with Dan Rather, which airs on AXS TV, is hosted by the 89-year-old.

Her children, like her spouse, have a great job. Robin Rather, her 61-year-old daughter, is an environmental activist and sustainability specialist. Danjack, her 59-year-old son, is an attorney. He retired after nearly 33 years as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan.

Goebel has two grandkids through Danjack’s marriage.

Martin Rather, her eldest grandson, is an aspiring election lawyer. In May of this year, the 23-year-old received his Master’s degree from Columbia Journalism School. His grandmother and he have a tight relationship.
Andy Rather, her other grandson, works for the government.

Prioritizes Values of the Family

Jean and her family had a Christmas quiz in 2017. On Jean’s grandson’s smartphone, it was simply another quiz game.

The game’s rules were simple: answer 12 questions correctly and win a prize. Jean’s grandson properly answered the question about musician Kendrick Lamar, and Jean chimed in with her arts and crafts skills for another issue.

Dan, Jean’s husband, correctly answered a trivia question regarding the Iran-Contra incident, while Danjack, the elderly couple’s son, correctly answered a question about Phil Collins and Genesis.

The Rather family outperformed all other competitors and took home a $30 prize. Dan, who has a net worth of $70 million, stressed that the game was not about winning a large quantity of money, but about having fun as a family and creating lasting memories.

He went on to say that expressing a spirit of love and family was crucial, and that the Rather family had done so for the 2017 holiday season.
