John Prine: Early Life and Family

John Prine was born on October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois, in the United States. William Mason Prine was his father’s name, and Verna Valentine was his mother’s. His father was a tool and die maker, and his mother was a stay-at-home mother. David, Doug, and Billy were his three brothers. During the summers, they would return to visit family near Paradise, Kentucky. His brother, David, taught him to play the guitar when he was 14 years old.

Prine attended Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and Maywood, Illinois’ Proviso Township High School (later renamed Proviso East). For five years, he worked as a mailman before being drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and serving in Germany before beginning his musical career in Chicago. Prine’s wife Fiona revealed on March 19, 2020, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, that she had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and had been quarantined in their home apart from him. On March 26, he was admitted to the hospital after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. On March 30, Fiona tweeted that she had recovered and that John’s condition was stable but not improving.

Prine died as a result of COVID-19 complications on April 7, 2020. As he requested in his song “Paradise,” half of Prine’s ashes were scattered in Kentucky’s Green River. In Chicago, the other half of his body was buried next to his parents.

John Prine made his professional debut in 1971 with the release of his self-titled debut album.
