Joseph Walter Jackson was born in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, on July 26, 1928. He was of Native American and African ancestry. He was the eldest of five siblings. His father, Samuel Jackson, was a secondary school teacher, while his mother, Crystal Lee King, was a homemaker.

Jackson’s parents split when he was 12 years old. Surprisingly, he died on June 27, 2018, from Pancreatic illness. Jackson remembers his father as repressive and exacting as a boy, and he described himself in his notebook.
