Early Life

Lea Gabrielle was raised by her father, a professional Navy Jag, and after graduating from Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, she enrolled at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. She wanted to pursue a career in science after being named a finalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search in 1997, so she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Lea joined the active-duty Navy immediately after graduation, attending the US Navy Flight School at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida. She received her Naval Aviator Wings diploma after studying there for two years. She was also licensed as a commercial pilot and had an instrument rating.

Career

Lea’s career in the United States Navy eventually began when she became a fighter pilot of the single-seat F/A-18 “Hornet,” a position she held for 12 years while also serving as a landing signal officer (LSO) and a squadron public affairs officer. She also served in Iraq and Afghanistan, where her duties included providing air support for ground troops, serving as an intelligence operations officer in Operation Enduring Freedom, and serving as a defense foreign liaison officer.

Nonetheless, Lea was always interested in journalism as much as she was in science and serving her country. So after leaving the Navy, she moved to New York to pursue a career as a journalist. She enrolled at the New York Film Academy to study journalism. She began working for NBC News almost immediately after receiving her digital journalism certificate in 2009. People at the time recognized her talent and dedication. She was allowed to write, produce, and edit “The Today Show,” NBC’s nightly news program, in 2010.

She was also in charge of writing news, editing articles, and taking photographs for NBC’s website. Her job as a digital journalist was to cover all news stories for every NBC affiliate in the country. She had the unique opportunity to conduct interviews and reports. Lea moved to San Diego, California, in September 2011 to work as a military reporter for KNSD-TV (NBC 7) after her reports about the missing Malaysia Airlines flight increased her net worth and popularity. She worked as a journalist in San Diego for about two years before adopting her married name, Lea Sutton.
