Whitfield was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the eldest of four children and the daughter of finance agency official Jean Butler and dentist Valerian Smith. Her mother is African-American, and her father is Creole, so she is part Native American. Whitfield is a third-generation Howard University BFA graduate, but she credits her love of acting to her father, who was a founding member of the Baton Rouge community theater. She went and performed at the Black Repertory Company in Washington, D.C. to feed her enthusiasm.
