Maria Taylor Bio

Maria Taylor, born Maria Diane Taylor, is an American singer-songwriter and member of the duo Azure Ray with Orenda Fink. She is well-known for collaborating with artists including Bright Eyes, Moby, Michael Stipe, Phoebe Bridgers, and Joshua Radin.

Early Life, Age, Parents

Maria Taylor was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 21, 1976. There is currently no other information available about her family. It is assumed that she dropped out of school or went to private school to focus on her singing career. She began singing when she was 15 years old.

Maria Taylor’s Professional Career

Her musical career began when she was fifteen years old, when she joined the band Little Red Rocket. Later, the band disbanded, and Maria relocated to Athens, Georgia, where she formed Azure Ray with Orenda Fink. Their self-titled debut was released in 2001. In 2002, the team released their second album, Burn and Silver, as well as The Great Escape and Landing. Taylor launched her solo career in 2005 with the release of 11:11 on Saddle Creek Records. Lynn Teeter Flower, her second solo album, was released a year later. One of the tracks, A Good Start, was named one of NPR’s top ten songs of 2007.

She recorded numerous solos over the years, and one of them peaked at number 48 on Billboard’s ‘Heatseekers’ chart. After a six-year sabbatical, Azure Ray reformed for a one-time reunion event and collaborated on the album Drawing Down the Moon. Maria even toured with Azure Ray and published As Above, So Below. The band now publishes numerous albums together on a regular basis. Her production career began with her company, Flower Moon Records.

Under this label, she released her song In The Next Life in December 2016. A year later, she went on tour with Ben Lee, Mike Watt, and Joey Waronker in Los Angeles. Maria appeared on The Ellen Show in October 2019. She appeared in Phoebe Bridger’s cover of John Prine’s “Summer’s End” in 2021. Other music videos in which Maria has appeared include Song Beneath The Song, A Good Start, Time Lapse Lifeline, Cartoons, Forever Plans, Matador, Light of the World, and Spinning Wheel.
