Early Life

There aren’t many details about Matthew’s childhood, except that he went to Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Michigan and studied Communication and Media Studies, earning an associate’s degree. He then went on to Western Michigan University, where he earned a degree in English and Literature. He went on to study law after graduation, earning his Juris Doctorate from The George Washington University Law School in 1997.

Lyons began working as a member of the US House of Representatives staff after finishing his studies. He worked there for three years, becoming a member of the energy and commerce committee. He then spent two years as a public policy analyst at Clark & Weinstock before returning to the US House of Representatives, where he became the legislative director. In 2000, he was appointed director of government relations at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, a position he would hold for the next three years.
In 2003, he was hired as a senior manager at the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, where he stayed for a year before becoming a legislative analyst at the FDA for another year before being promoted to a senior legislative analyst for oversight in 2005. He held that position until 2008 when he was transferred to Washington, DC to work as a branch chief at the FDA until 2014 when he was promoted to Director of Stakeholder Relations for a month before returning to his position as branch chief in 2015.
