Early Childhood Development and Education

Max Alfred, an English reggae performer, was born in Lewisham, London, England, on June 10, 1961. He is the second youngest of a family of nine siblings. He grew up in a blended family in Lewisham.

Max used to listen to a wide range of music as a kid, including gospel, reggae, R&B, and pop. His Pentecostal missionary mother urged him to learn music. As a youth, he started singing in church and hoisted speaker boxes for the Jah Shaka and Negus Negast sound systems.

After a few years, Max became one of just two British reggae performers to have a Billboard number one in the United States: ‘Close to You.’ The song was also a great hit in the United States, peaking at number twenty.

Max has also collaborated with artists like Beres Hammond, Apache Indian, Roberta Flack, and Lee Ritenour. In the year 2012, Max recorded a rendition of L’Arc-en-song Ciel’s “Vivid Colors” for the band’s English-language tribute album.
