Pat Sajak: Early Life and Family

Pat’s father worked in manufacturing. He attended Farragut High School before enrolling at Columbia College Chicago. During college, he worked as a desk clerk at Palmer House, then in 1968, he joined the United States Army and served with the American Forces Vietnam Network, where he became a disc jockey during the Vietnam War.

Professional Career

He was a member of Armed Forces Radio until 1970. He then went to work for a radio station in Murray, Kentucky, for a year before becoming a DJ at WSM, which played pop music most of the day. WSMV, the radio station’s television sister business, eventually hired him to work in front of the camera. He started off doing voiceovers before landing a job as an anchor for five-minute newscasts on NBC’s “Today Show.” He subsequently worked as a weatherman, which brought him to KNBC-TV, where he remained full-time for many years.

Merv Griffin asked Sajak if he wanted to take over as host of “Wheel of Fortune” in 1981, but the offer was turned down because NBC’s CEO thought he was too local. When Merv placed an embargo on new tapings until Sajak was hired, he was finally approved as host, and he went on to anchor “Wheel” from 1983 to 1989, before continuing to host the present edition of the show.

In addition to his work on “Wheel of Fortune,” he has been in several films and television series. He was a newscaster in “Airplane II: The Sequel” before participating in shows like “Super Password” and “Password Plus,” and he was also a guest on “Just Men!” He had a late-night talk program on CBS in 1989, which was short-lived, but it led to his being a frequent guest presenter on “Larry King Live” and a replacement host on “Live with Regis and Kelley.” In 2003, he began anchoring a Fox News Channel program called “Pat Sajak Weekend.”
