Polona Hercog: Early Life and Family

Polona was born in Maribor, SR Slovenia, SFR Yugoslavia, on January 20, 1991. She is the daughter of Romana, a florist, and Vojko, the owner of a pub. Polona presently resides in her hometown and studies in Budapest. She is fluent in English, Italian, and Slovenian. Polona has kept her educational background a closely guarded secret. Professional Career

Polona made her WTA Tour debut at Portoroz in 2007, where she was defeated in three sets by Elena Vesnina. In 2008, she was spotted competing in the Istanbul Cup, where she lost in the first round against Tsvetana but advanced to the doubles finals with Marina Erakovic of New Zealand.

She went on to win two Grand Slam junior doubles titles with Australian Jessica Moore. Polona qualified for the 2009 Grand Prix SAR la Princesse Lalla Meryem in Morocco, where she defeated seventh seed Robert Vinci and advanced to the quarter-finals before losing to Alisa Kleybanova.

She continued to play in the same manner until 2015 when she began the year at the ASB Classic and was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Monica Puig. Polona faced the second seed in the first round of the US Open and had to withdraw due to sickness, finishing the year ranked 139 due to not playing.

In 2017, she competed in her first WTA Tour competition since the 2016 US Open, defeating French Wild Card Harmony Tan in the first round of qualifying. She lost in the first round of a 25k tournament in Grado and was seeded seventh at the Internazionali di Brescia after overcoming Ganna Poznikhirenko in the final two sets.

Polona began her tournament in 2019 by competing in the Auckland Open, where she lost in the first round against Hsieh Su Wei. She was defeated by Olivia Rogowska at Hobart International. Polona competed at the Dubai Championship, where she lost in the last round to Kristina Mladenovic, and the Qatar Open, where she lost in the first round to Alison Van Uytvanck. In 2021, she was defeated by Maria Sakkari in the final round at Grand Stand Arena on May 10, 2021.
