Preston Roberts was born in the United States on July 17, 1957, in Westfield, New Jersey. He grew up in Brevard, North Carolina, a small town. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Atlantic Christian College.

Appalachian State University awarded Robert a bachelor’s degree in art education. Following his graduation, he met Eustace Conway in 1982 and the two became lifelong friends. They rode horses across North and South Carolina together. They also passed through Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska at the time. Robert co-created the Turtle Island Preserve initiative with Eustace.
