Prince Albert II: Early Life and Family

Prince Albert was born in the Monaco Prince’s Palace on March 14, 1958. And he is currently 62 years old. Monsignor Jean Delay, archbishop of Marseille, baptized him in Monaco’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on April 20, 1958, before presenting him to the people of Monaco on the Palace’s balcony. Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, is his father, and Grace Kelly, an American actress, is his mother.

The Prince’s ancestors come from Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France, Mexico, Belgium, and Monaco. The prince was also born in America and raised in Monaco. However, in his early adulthood, he renounced his American citizenship.

Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain was his godmother, and Prince Louis de Polignac was his godfather (1909–1996). As a result of her injuries, his mother died in a car accident in 1982. She passed away when she was 52 years old.

In a 2017 In-Depth interview with Graham Bensinger, the Prince of Monaco stated that his mother’s death was a traumatic event for him and his family. In addition, the prince stated that his father was “never the same man” after his father died.

Prince Albert II of Monaco was a camper and later a counselor at Camp Tecumseh on Lake Winnipesaukee in Moultonborough, New Hampshire, in the 1970s. Following a year of training in various princely duties, the prince enrolled as Albert Grimaldi in 1977 at Amherst College in western Massachusetts, where he studied political science, economics, music, and English literature, as well as joining the Chi Psi fraternity.

He is fluent in French, English, German, and Italian. In addition, the prince traveled to Europe and the Middle East with the Amherst Glee Club in mid-1979. In 1979, he also attended the University of Bristol’s Alfred Marshall School of Economics and Management.

Prince Albert earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1981. He then completed his military service in the French Navy.
