Ralphie May: Early Life and Family

Ralphie experienced a lot of hardship as a child. He was reared in Clarksville, Tennessee, where his mother was a florist. His parents didn’t get along well and eventually developed a hatred for one another, which resulted in their divorce, but in the interim, he and his three siblings were frequently the targets of the fallout. His father soon stopped sending her child support, and she later sued him for not doing so.

Ralphie and his brothers grew very close to their grandma, whom he attributes as being the one who gave him and his siblings the most support as they grew up. He first learned humor from his grandmother, who also taught him how to crochet and make quilts. He suffered a car accident when he was 16 years old, fracturing 42 bones, which made his already severe obesity problem worse. Ralphie May recovered the following year and won a competition to support comedian Sam Kinison, who later suggested he try his hand at establishing comedy in Houston.

He then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment after graduating from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

In addition, he made countless additional television appearances, including on “The Wayne Brady Show,” but all of his accomplishments contributed to his wealth before he passed away.

Professional Career

May was chosen in 2003 to participate in the first season of the competition show “Last Comic Standing,” which pits aspiring comics against one another for a chance to win a television special and $100,000. He came in second place, losing to Dat Pha, but garnered a lot of media exposure and was mentioned on shows like “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Wayne Brady Show.”

In 2005, Ralphie wed fellow comedian Lahna Turner; the couple would go on to have two children. In 2015, Ralphie filed for divorce, asking for shared custody of their kids, but the divorce was never finalized. He has a history of obesity, and after the vehicle accident when he was 16 years old, his weight even reached 800 pounds. He joined the “Celebrity Fit Club” as a result of his obesity issues and had gastric bypass surgery, which caused him to lose 450 pounds. After battling viral pneumonia in 2011, he also lost 40 pounds.

He experienced a nearly catastrophic pulmonary embolism that same year while traveling by cruise ship due to a blood clot that formed in his thigh and lodged in an artery. Two years later, he and his wife launched the “Perfect 10” podcast, a venture they both found enjoyable before their marriage fell apart.

It was reported that May’s physical health had been declining before his death in 2017 and that he had displayed symptoms of an illness that was getting worse. Before his passing, he had already postponed several performances that were set to take place in Las Vegas. He went on a cruise and picked up pneumonia, which he fought for a few weeks before passing away from cardiac arrest.

His wife and two children, as well as his mother, two sisters, a brother, a stepmother, and two step-siblings, survived him. A memoir about him titled “This Might Get A Little Heavy” was released later in the year. He frequently stated in interviews that he wanted to help others and that he preferred not to use fat jokes in his performances because he preferred to be known as a comedian who just so happens to be fat, rather than fat.
