Before his family moved to New York City, New York, Richard Blanco was born on February 15, 1968, in Madrid, Spain, to Cuban immigrants. He was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Richard received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (in 1991) and his Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Florida International University (in 1997).

He is currently a professor at Florida International University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
