Roger Guenveur Smith was born in Berkeley, California, United States of America, on July 27, 1955. Sherman Smith, his father, was a judge, and Helen Guenveur, his mother, was a dentist. He was born and raised in Berkeley. He went to Occidental College in Los Angeles to get an early education.

Roger Guenveur Smith continued his study after graduating from Occidental College by enrolling at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
