Ryan began quarter midget racing as a child because he was born into a racing family and won his first race at the age of nine. He also competed in Bandolero car racing competitions before moving on to Legends car racing when he was 12 years old. He then went on to win the Young Lion’s Winter Heat Point Championship at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Blaney won multiple races throughout his adolescence, including the Eastern Grand Nationals quarter midget event in 2009 and the PASS South Super Late Model Series in 2010.
Blaney won his first NASCAR race at the Phoenix International Raceway in the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West series finale. In April 2012, he signed with Tommy Baldwin Racing and raced in six NASCAR Nationwide Series events. Blaney signed a three-race deal with Team Penske in July 2012 for the 2012 Nationwide Series season. On September 15, 2012, he made his Camping World Truck Series debut, driving for Brad Keselowski Racing, and became the youngest Truck Series race winner at Iowa Speedway.
