Carl began sharing hilarious video clips of himself and his family members on his own YouTube channel. Soon after, he got the attention of Philip DeFranco, a well-known YouTube celebrity with over 6.3 million subscribers, who gave him a shout-out, resulting in a massive inflow of subscribers to Carl’s channel. With his newfound internet celebrity, Shay began extending his business, and in October 2008, he launched a YouTube channel called SHAYTARDS, where he began uploading numerous videos and sketches starring his wife and his five children. The latter channel received the annual Open Web Award for Best YouTube Channel or Personality in 2009, and it was nominated for the Streamy Awards’ Best Non-Fiction or Reality Series award in 2013. Shay Carl and his eponymous YouTube channel were named 31st on the New Media Rockstars’ Top 100 Channels list in 2014, which helped him get even more followers and subscribers.
