Compassion!” and a musical adaptation of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” He died in Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

He was also a four-time Tony winner at the age of 81, and he was noted for his nuanced depictions of gay life, homophobia, love, and AIDS. McNally had lung cancer as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He is also acknowledged as one of America’s best playwrights. As a result, he wrote over a dozen plays during his nearly 60-year career.

Terrence McNally was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, on November 3, 1938. Hubert Arthur McNally and Dorothy Katharine (Rapp) McNally were his parents. McNally graduated from W.B. Ray High School.

Maurine McElroy, a gifted high school English teacher, pushed him to write. He enrolled at Columbia College in 1956. He also graduated with a B.A. in English and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society in 1960.

McNally died of complications from coronavirus illness 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic on March 24, 2020, at the age of 81, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida. He had beaten lung cancer in the late 1990s, which had taken both sides of his lungs, and he was suffering from COPD at the time of his death.

McNally is an American playwright whose plays frequently incorporate dark humor and examine human relationships, notably those of gay men. He also composed musical play scripts. When he was younger, McNally worked as a newspaper reporter, a tutor for the children of American novelist John Steinbeck, and a stage manager at The Actors Studio.
‘Bad Habits’ (produced in 1971), ‘The Ritz’ (initially performed as ‘The Tubs’ in 1973; film 1976), and ‘Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune’ were also among his early pieces (produced in 1987; film 1991). McNally earned a Tony Award for best play for ‘Love! Valor! Compassion!’ (film 1997) in 1995, and another the following year for ‘Master Class,’ one of several opera-related pieces he created.
McNally has been referred to as “the bard of American theater” and “one of the best current playwrights the theater industry has yet created,” and he was elected into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1996.
His 1998 picture Corpus Christi aroused anger because it showed a homosexual Christ-like persona.
