He graduated from Lincoln High School and enrolled at the University of California, Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Development. Urijah wrestled for the University of California-Davis squad and competed in the NCAA tournaments in 2001 and 2002.

Professional Career

Urijah turned professional in 2003 when he joined the Gladiator Challenge company, and he made his debut the following year, defeating Poes Manne. He proceeded to do well with the promotion, receiving a championship fight after only two victories, defeating David Velasquez for the GC Bantamweight title. Following his victory, Urijah began competing in the King of the Cage promotion, although he also remained in GC, winning wherever he competed. He defeated Hiroyuki Abe to defend his GC Bantamweight Championship title, and he also defeated Eben Kaneshiro to win the vacant King of the Cage Bantamweight Championship title in November 2004. He won the following five fights to retain his championship, defeating Hiroyuki Abe, Shawn Bias, Charles Bennett, Charlie Valencia, and Bibiano Fernandes.

Urijah felt ready for the next level as his abilities developed, and he joined World Extreme Cage-fighting, making his debut on March 17, 2006, against Cole Escovedo, which was also a title bout, and he became the new WEC Featherweight Champion. Urijah Faber defended his championship five times, defeating competitors like Joe Pearson, Dominick Cruz, Chance Farrar, Jeff Curran, and Jens Pulver. He held the title until the 5th of November 2008, when he lost it to Mike Brown, only his second career defeat.

Urijah Faber booked a rematch with Brown in June 2009, but Faber was defeated once more, this time by unanimous decision. He needed considerable time to heal from Brown’s injuries before returning to the ring in January 2010 and beating Raphael Assunço.
