Early Life

Wendy grew up in Hamilton but went to John Rennie High School in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. She grew up with a younger brother who also went to high school, and after graduation, she enrolled at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. During her time at the school, she developed a strong interest in acting and was awarded a Lorne Greene Award for her work in the school’s theatre.

She continued her studies at the Weber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London after finishing her bachelor’s degree. She began her professional career in the 1980s, appearing in Canadian television shows as well as a few feature films with minor roles; some of her projects during this period included “Night Heat,” “Tanner ’88,” and “Street Legal.” In 1991, she had her breakthrough role in the film “The Doctor,” which was loosely based on Dr. Edward Rosenbaum’s book “A Taste of My Own Medicine.”

Crewson then began to land more high-profile roles, beginning with the psychological thriller “The Good Son,” in which she co-starred with Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin, and in 1994, she was cast in “The Santa Clause,” a Christmas family comedy starring Tim Allen as Scott Calvin, a man who causes Santa Clause to fall from his roof, and who then realizes that he must become the new Santa, and convince his loved ones of who he has become. Two years later, she played the mother of Eric Lloyd’s character in “To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday,” a story about a family dealing with the death of their wife/mother.

She also appeared in the action thriller film “Air Force One,” starring Harrison Ford, as Grace Marshall, the First Lady to President James Marshall, who is played by Ford. In 1999, she co-starred with Robin Williams in the science fiction film “The Positronic Man,” based on Isaac Asimov’s novel “Bicentennial Man”; despite its box office failure, the film has since gained a cult following.
