He earned a Purple Heart during his 26 years of military service, among other honors. The mother of Lewes was an English teacher. She spent a year working as an exchange teacher in England, where she also taught English to elementary-aged kids.

With her three siblings, Dillingham grew up all over the US. They were reared by their mother after their parents divorced in 1962. Dillingham visited Florida, Virginia, Hawaii, North and South Carolina, California, and other places throughout her formative years. In the movie, Peter Scolari played Henry Desmond/Hildegard against Tom Hanks as Kip Wilson/Buffy. Donna Dixon, Holland Taylor, and Telma Hopkins were also members of the core cast.
