Samantha Lewes was an actress who made appearances in the TV movies “Mr. Success” in 1984 and “Bosom Buddies” from ABC in 1981. She was Colin and Elizabeth Hanks’ mother and Tom Hanks’ first wife. Lewes was Hanks’ undergraduate love and a native of California. Their marriage occurred rather early in their lives. At the time, he was 21 and she was 25 years old.

The young couple struggled to make ends meet and occasionally lived in pieces. Elizabeth was born four and a half years after Colin, who was born in the latter part of 1977. Hanks relocated the family to New York City in 1979, where he steadily made a name for himself as a stand-up comedian and actor.

Samantha Lewes: Early Life and Family

Lewes’ parents, John Raymond Dillingham and Harriet Hall Dillingham, gave birth to Susan Jane Dillingham on November 29, 1952, in San Diego, California, in the United States. Her father was an American marine who fought in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.

He earned a Purple Heart during his 26 years of military service, among other honors. The mother of Lewes was an English teacher. She spent a year working as an exchange teacher in England, where she also taught English to elementary-aged kids.

With her three siblings, Dillingham grew up all over the US. They were reared by their mother after their parents divorced in 1962. Dillingham visited Florida, Virginia, Hawaii, North and South Carolina, California, and other places throughout her formative years. To be near her brother, David, her mother ultimately made the decision to relocate the family to northern California.

While attending California State University, Sacramento, Dillingham, and Hanks became friends. Between the two, a connection grew. She became expecting their first child in the early months of 1977. The young couple struggled financially during this time, and things got worse after they welcomed their children into the world.

On November 24, 1977, while they were still residing in Sacramento, Lewes gave birth to their eldest child, Colin Hanks. In 1981, she appeared in the season one episode “Cahoots” of the sitcom “Bosom Buddies” as a waitress. The program ran on ABC for two seasons, from November 27, 1980, to March 27, 1982. It was created by Chris Thompson, Thomas L. Miller, and Robert L. Boyett.

In the movie, Peter Scolari played Henry Desmond/Hildegard against Tom Hanks as Kip Wilson/Buffy. Donna Dixon, Holland Taylor, and Telma Hopkins were also members of the core cast. By chance, Hanks met Rita Wilson, an actress, while working on the show. In “All You Need Is Love,” an episode from season 2, she played Cindy (1981).

Death and Later Years

Samantha Lewes avoided the spotlight following her divorce from Tom Hanks. She brought up her two children there for the remainder of her life. When Hanks learned about it, he set up an appointment for her to meet leading experts in the area.
